Description

"kourindou" is a drawing of Rinnosuke looking into a flip phone emitting blue light from its screen in a painterly style. A few monitors are in the bottom left, slightly reflecting the light on their screens.

Background

As a "sequel" to suzunaan, this piece concludes the 3-piece "Literature Protagonists Series," consisting of melancholy, suzunaan and this.

The basic sketch was created around a year ago, but I never had the motivation to go through with it, one of the reasons being that Rinnosuke was one of the most complicated characters I had ever drawn. I finished up the sketch and did some simple coloring using my favorite acrylic brushes in two days, after a long period of negligence.
The lighting was chosen to be blue because of melancholy's green background and suzunaan's warm, reddish coloring.

Techniques

I used one layer for each overlapping chunk, such as the head, hair, glasses, eyebrow, ear, etc. The outline was done using a simple pen brush, with a few acrylic brush strokes on certain edges like parts of hair to give it more texture.
The fill was done mostly using acrylic brushes, which blends easily and can express a lot of texture with just a few strokes. The rake brush was used sparsely for the hair as well, as an experiment.
